Yesterday evening I called DBS bank in Singapore to request some information. When the operator spoke to me with my familiar Singalish, I couldn’t get what she was talking about.  All I heard was her cadenced tone, but I couldn’t catch many of the words in each sentence.

I felt both upset and amused.  At the same time, I was impressed by how dependent it is for one’s language development on the person’s living environment.
